The vote was 23-22. Toronto’s controversial land transfer tax was shot down–for now.
It was a major political loss for Mayor Miller. Miller said services will likely be cut and property taxes will likely be raised without the tax.
The issue comes up for vote again in October.

Hi DK, I tried to find the answer to this but no luck. Perhaps it will be in city council’s minutes once they’re released.

The city needs the money so it’s forseeable that they’d shoot for January 1, 2008 if the tax passed in October. It would just depend on how long it takes to implement the new tax collection procedures.
