Pillar Financial Services Inc. is
seeking business-minded mortgage underwriters as part of our team to
advance our strategic plans primarily in Ontario. The successful
candidate will have good knowledge with all aspects of alternative
mortgage lending & worked successfully with mortgage brokers in
business retention & development. We are looking for motivated
self-starters with 3+ years of direct experience, a post-secondary
degree in business administration (or equivalent), and FSCO registered.
We are open to remote work arrangements for the right candidates.

Pillar Financial Services Inc. sources, underwrites and administers mortgages for the Frontenac Mortgage Investment Corporation which also retains W.A. Robinson Asset Management Ltd. as
its Portfolio Manager and Investment Fund Manager. The three companies
have been operating out of the head office in Sharbot Lake for 30 years.

Job Description

General Duties:

to Head of Underwriting, the Mortgage Underwriter is primarily responsible for
rendering credit and pricing decisions on incoming applications consistent with Pillar policies, guidelines and systems,
all tasks relative to the issuance of mortgage commitments and funding, and plays
a strong supportive role in business development, all in keeping with personal
and departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).


Key Duties and

  • Respond to origination channels –
    primarily mortgage brokers/agents – by acknowledgement of applications within
    24 hours of receipt and to follow up promptly on missing information,
    additional required information, etc.
  • Receive, review, analyze & verify
    mortgage applications for completeness, accuracy, suitability and risk by applying
    internal underwriting guidelines and systems to the credit decision
  • Negotiate loan terms and pricing to
    meet the interests of the customer and Pillar.
  • Prepare packages on and recommend
    mortgage deals for approval.
  • Obtain approval of mortgage application
    and issue mortgage commitments according to the terms negotiated and approved.
  • Verify
    supporting documentation submitted.
  • Provide guidance, direction and
    assistance (as required) to Mortgage Fulfillment Officers and Underwriting
    Administration Assistants to ensure a high level of service.
  • Support and collaborate with Business
    Development officers, including representing Pillar at trade shows, workshops,
    conferences, etc.
  • Develop and maintain professional
    relationships with origination sources and professional associates.
  • Maintain an expert level of knowledge
    on the use of technology, such as Filogix.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Mortgage
    Brokers Act and other applicable legislation.
  • Maintain qualifications for licensing
  • Acquire expert knowledge of the
    organization’s policies and procedures with respect to mortgage underwriting.
  • Work with the Head of Underwriting to
    improve and implement internal underwriting systems in terms of efficacy and
  • Meet or exceed personal KPIs as agreed.


Ideal Skills/Qualifications:


  • Minimum – graduate from the Ontario Advanced Business
    Administration program, or equivalent, majoring in either accounting or finance;
  • Ontario Mortgage Broker/Agent designation.


Experience: 3+ years mortgage
underwriting or other lending experience in Canada



  • Good knowledge of credit and underwriting practices
    in terms of using the common sense approach to the 5Cs and mortgage products in
    the alternative market in Canada,
  • Working knowledge of real estate appraisals,
    assessments, legislation and land title systems,
  • Good people skills and adept at building customer
    relations – a well-defined sense of diplomacy including problem solving,
    conflict resolution and interpersonal skills; demonstrated strong aptitude for
    leadership and providing assistance to others,
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated
    ability to resolve complicated issues
    as they arise,
  • Developed influential skills sufficient to
    negotiate effectively with business partners and to convince others of the preferred
    options and alternatives,
  • Proven organizational skills with
    demonstrated ability to prioritize, multi-task,
    and time-manage,
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with
    strong attention to details,
  • Working
    knowledge of financial analysis sufficient to understand financial statements
    and assess financial viability,
  • Understand how to delegate tasks and supervise,
  • Computer Literacy – proficiency in MS Office and
  • Knowledge of Mortgage Brokers Act and other
    applicable legislation,
  • Ability to use initiative and good judgment,
  • Results-oriented – track record in achieving high results
    an asset,
  • Ability to identify process improvements and make recommendations
    to supervisors,
