Established in 1994, Mortgage Professionals Canada is the national mortgage broker channel association representing the largest and most respected network of mortgage professionals in the country. Our over 11,000 members are drawn from every province and from all mortgage industry sectors.

 

The Opportunity

Mortgage Professionals Canada interacts regularly with federal and provincial government officials and we are seeking an energetic and focused individual to join our team. The successful candidate has experience creating position papers, drafting public policy statements on consumer protection issues, undertaking business practices, and critically examining and understanding the impact of proposed legislative changes. The Manager, Public Affairs will report directly to the CEO conducting research, building relationships with all levels of government, and coordinating advocacy messaging and government relations events with our members.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with senior management as well as our members, external government relations consultants and legal counsel to ensure a comprehensive understanding of policy issues, including background research and analysis
  • Identify and coordinate the development of written responses to formal policy consultations and emerging issues
  • Participate in the planning, preparation, and monitoring for Mortgage Professionals Canada's engagement with regulatory and government committees
  • Coordinate the efforts of Mortgage Professionals Canada with industry stakeholders, members and other associations, to ensure consistent policy positions (when applicable) and ensure senior management is kept informed
  • Work with applicable departments to ensure reliable and consistent messaging is delivered
  • Build and maintain relationships with elected officials and public servants in Canada's federal and provincial governments, and help Mortgage Professionals Canada establish regular dialogue with politicians and public servants, including coordinating participation at public sector events
  • Take primary responsibility for tracking and registering the lobbying activities of the CEO and the association ensuring compliance with federal and provincial lobbying regulations
  • Provide advice, research and analysis on the strategic management of corporate and business issues to protect and enhance Mortgage Professionals Canada’s brand and reputation - anticipate issues, develop strategic plans, support senior management in responding to emerging issues
  • Work with National Director, Membership, ensuring the efforts of the Government Relations department fits  within the association’s broader marketing and communications plan, and help to implement its overall advocacy strategy
  • Occasional travel is required

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 4 years' experience with federal and provincial political and policy development processes, preferably with direct experience as an elected official, political advisor or public servant
  • Proven ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a compelling and persuasive manner, as well as an ability to interpret the messaging of stakeholders for both risk and opportunity
  • Demonstrated experience in exercising judgment in dealing with sensitive situations
  • Experience with issue management and/or media relations
  • Superior organizational skills and ability to deliver high quality work under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to think laterally, and to find new opportunities to raise the profile and reputation of the association  among key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated capacity to sort meaningful, relevant and useful insights from overwhelming streams of data
  • Ability to identify early signals of risk and opportunity, and to offer deliverable responses
  • Must have clearance from any potential conflicts of interest including, if requested, written confirmation from the appropriate Conflict of Interest Commissioner
  • Must be able to register as a lobbyist, and remain compliant with the federal Lobbyist Registration Act
  • University education required
  • Fluency in Canada's two official languages would be an asset
